I’ve had hamsters and I can tell you that they are great pets and can be lots of fun.

Their ability to store food in their cheeks always made me laugh but the one thing that was always of interest was their nocturnal habits.

They would sleep during the day and, as soon as it became dark, they would party – this often involved high energy workouts on the hamster wheel.

When I was ready for sleep, Hammy the hamster would set off like Forest Gump on his wheel, rattling away as he whizzed it around.

It got me thinking, is there a way to silence a hamster wheel, while still providing the hamster with his daily Pelotonesque workout?

The best way to get night time respite from an energetic hamster that works out on his wheel is to move his cage to a different room where he cannot disturb you. Rather than worry about silencing his wheel, just put him in a place where he can run to his heart’s content.

I don’t want to move him. Should I just get rid of the wheel?

No! Your hamster needs his wheel and he won’t survive without it. His wheel keeps him fit and occupied and is one of his main sources of entertainment.

To take away his wheel is like taking the PS4 away from a teenager.

The only way that you could do this is if you replaced his wheel with something else, such as a hamster ball that will allow him to run around and explore the house.

Can I make the hamster wheel more quiet?

You can try to lubricate the wheel with some vegetable oil. Pay particular attention to the bearings where the wheel mounts to the cage.

Use olive oil or similar as it won’t be dangerous to your hamster.

Don’t use WD40 or any other petroleum or silicone based products as these could be harmful to your pet.

Get a better cage for your hamster

The best way to stop your hamster from disturbing you at night with his noisy wheel is to buy him a palatial cage.

Provide him with lots of room and plenty of things to do and explore by getting him a large hamster home that has lots of different features.

Traditional hamster cages are small and poorly insulated whereas a modern hamster palace will be made from good quality, insulated materials and will have a variety of rooms and other things where your hamster can expend energy.

Final Words

If you do get a hamster, then keep in mind that they need a lot of room and their wheels should be well lubricated to prevent noise.

Finally, if all else fails and you are kept awake by your pet’s nightly workouts on his wheel, just move him to another room or buy him a hamster palace with lots of things to do.
