Possibly the most remote hostel I’ve ever stayed in – there’s nothing except wild nature for miles around! Accessed by foot only by trekking up the Ennerdale valley or coming in from over the fells, this hostel offers the most basic accommodation, but in the most stunning of locations. I visited during Storm Amy and particularly loved the atmosphere this bought to the hostel.
Ross and Mike work tirelessly to keep the generator/solar powered Black Sail fit for purpose and I can only imagine what it must be like to be stationed there 24/7! They’re managing every aspect as well as preparing evening meals and breakfasts for guests, so hats off to them.
Tremendous walks in the area and I highly recommend watching the evening and morning light illuminate the valley.
No phone signal and WiFi is switched off at 10pm, but the shower is hot with good pressure and the bedrooms are comfy and warm! The hostel has a fascinating history and it was a pleasure to learn about it from the staff.
10/10 I highly recommend this place if you’re doing the coast to coast walk or just looking for a tranquil break from the riffraff!
Amazing place. Good welcome from Steve, outstanding knowledge of the area from Ross as well as great cooking and overall hospitality and true commitment from Mike in chatting to guests even on his day off. Thank you all!
The location couldn’t be better – go and stay at this hostel if you like to wake up to one of the best views in Britain!
Can’t recommend enough.
Fantastic location and amazing set up. Good hot shower, clean rooms. Superb host Anthony the warden.
You want to be ashamed for turning a man away because he hadn’t booked. Even when you had space and were told he was suffering with the start of dementia and was having abit of an episode with just getting used to having to take medication. He was out trying to come to terms with such a horrible disease, and you turned a vunerable man away. Not one single bit of compation shown. You could of offered to charge his phone maybe sit and have a conversation and a brew. But you turned him away mike. That man could of walked off and commited suicide he was in such that vunerable state due to having to come to terms with his diagnosis SHAME ON YOU MIKE SHAME ON YOU !!!
Guys this is something between a mountain cottage and bothy. Don’t come here if you expect luxury. You have to walk 6km from the car park with all your gear and supplies on ya back. We stayed here 3 days. We rented the whole place. The views are stunning. Is situated in the valley and you can see a little bit of great Gable. The cottage is mesmerizing with a fireplace and no wifi or any signal, just a vast space of nature and peace. A flock of sheep will greet you in the morning passing by. If you want a break from civilization, that’s the place for you. We love every minute of it. Coming back. Best cottage in Lakes. Just the way we like it❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🌲
