The Wayside & Whisky Barn is an absolutely beautiful place to stay for a peaceful break in the Lake District. Set in a quiet village close to the coast and right at the foot of Black Combe, it offers the perfect base — we had an incredible hike straight from the doorstep.
Emiko is a wonderful host: attentive, welcoming, full of helpful local knowledge, and an excellent cook. Our room was spotless, spacious, and thoughtfully equipped, with daily replenished baskets of tea, coffee, biscuits, and water; all complimentary.
The food is locally sourced, carefully prepared, and genuinely great value. If you’re looking for a calm, scenic getaway in the Lake District, this is exactly the kind of place you hope to find!
This is a very lovely B&B on the Cumbrian west coast at the foot of Black Combe. The location is breath-taking, our bedroom window looked out directly up the mountain and it’s also just a stone’s throw from the coast. In addition to Black Combe, to which a private greenway leads right from the back door, there are lots of walks around its foothills and the England Coast Path, and slightly further, 10 minutes on the train from Silecroft station brings you to Ravenglass with access to the Eskdale Valley. Alternatively it’s perfectly possible to walk to Boot.
The host and cook, Emiko, provides an extremely comfortable environment – well appointed bathroom, great bed linen in a spacious bedroom, easy chairs around the fireplace in the lounge/dining area. In addition there’s a full bar with a truly impressive range of whiskeys (about which Emiko is very knowledgeable), literally hundreds from all parts of Scotland, Ireland and Japan. Breakfasts are excellent (cereals, yoghurt, seeds, good croisant and coffee, good fry-up), packed lunches likewise (sandwiches, fruit and crisps), and with prior arrangement Emiko will also cook an extremely agreable three-course dinner, with a small but lovely wine list. After hours in the hills we retired blissful and content to a great night’s sleep.
Thank you very much for such a perfect stay! The cottage was incredibly well organized—everything had been thought of, absolutely nothing was missing. Be careful though, the doorways are low—watch your head! We received really thorough info both before and during our stay, which made everything so smooth. Our hosts were warm, friendly, and incredibly attentive. The trails right from the door made for amazing beach and mountain runs, and the views were just breathtaking. The whisky bar? A dream come true for any whisky lover. Add to that peaceful surroundings and a delicious, homemade breakfast—what more could we want? We’ll definitely be back.
Absolutely loved our stay at The Wayside and Whiskey Barn! From the moment we arrived, we were blown away by how exceptionally clean and beautifully maintained everything was. The facilities are truly pristine, every little detail has been thought of, and the whole place feels like a luxurious countryside retreat.
The hosts were incredibly warm and welcoming, going above and beyond to make sure we had the best possible experience. They gave us some brilliant local recommendations, thanks to them, we had an amazing time on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway, which was such a unique and fun way to see the area.
They also pointed us to some fantastic places to eat nearby. We had delicious meals at The Manor House and The Blacksmiths Arms, both of which had great atmosphere and top quality food.
If you have a passion for Whiskey, this is definitely the place to stay. What an incredible selection.
Honestly, this is one of those rare places where everything just clicks, peaceful, spotless, and hosted with genuine care. The lady serving our breakfast was an absolute gem too, so lovely to be looked after by people who care. Thankyou so much, Andrew & Barbara.
What a gem! Thank you so much for an unforgettable experience. The cottage is fully equipped—you could easily move in and stay forever. From the first contact, the information provided was spot on and helped us settle in easily. Our hosts were truly wonderful, always available and so thoughtful. We loved how quiet and serene everything was, with jaw-dropping views and trail options starting right at the doorstep. Beach jog? Mountain hike? Take your pick! Breakfast each morning was a treat—locally sourced, home baked, and beautifully presented. Don’t miss the whisky bar, either—it goes far beyond expectations. We’re already planning our return.
