We have just returned from an overnight stay attending the murder mystery event. Reception and check in was a pleasant experience and very welcoming. The room was spacious and warm and met our needs. Pleasant longe with log burner to keep us comfortable whilst relaxing and taking in the features of the hotel. The mural in the bar with its history being the main topic of discussion. The murder mystery event was enjoyable as was the meal. The food was exceptional. We will be back for future events.
We love this historic hotel. Beautiful gardens, obviously best appreciated in the spring/summer. We make use of the spa facilities when visiting, can definitely recommend, doesn’t get overly busy as not large facilities. Staff are polite, friendly & helpful. The food is lush. Great location for touring Weardale or North Yorkshire.
I would not recommend a night in hotel.
The hotel has potential, but our stay was let down by poor cleanliness and disappointing service. We found hair in the bath, cobwebs around the room and directly above your head on the mirror above bath, above bed, and a dirty coffee maker. There were no tea bags, the toilet roll was nearly used up with no spare, and the room felt very dark.
Breakfast was cold porridge and overcooked eggs and salmon—though the lady serving was friendly, the area was clean, and she did heat the porridge for us when asked.
When we arrived a staff member apologised when she saw the issues in the room, resolved bath/tea issue but unable to do others as in room. At checkout (Wednesday morning) our feedback received no apology or acknowledgement, which felt dismissive and uncaring “I’ll make a note” and then walked away from reception while we was still standing there.
Really poor attitude, we was calm/polite and it was fair feedback to give. It wasn’t personal so even basic sorry would have gone better.
The beds were uncomfortable, had squeaky frame on every move , the TV only had basic channels and wasn’t smart for additional login , and the angle of the TV meant the bedpost blocked part of the screen.
There is much better accommodation available elsewhere, which is a shame because the location is perfect.
I have just stayed at this hotel which I have to say I found disappointing. I paid for a deluxe double. The room was dated, the furniture worn and scratched. I was cold in bed because the duvet was a thin cheap duvet as were the second rate pillows. I needed to ask for a blanket for extra warmth. However my main concern was the bathroom. It was also dated but also no obvious care to the finer details. Please find attached the photos I took. The shampoo/ conditioner and bath wash holder were disgusting . The sink took 30 minutes to drain. The shower was grubby while the damp and mildew were not what I would expect in a deluxe bedroom.
The staff and food were the best bit!
Sad and disappointed with my stay . Not sure I would recommend.
I used their ‘pub’ facility after a wonderful run on the Greta Walk route (along the local river).
A good bar, decent hot food, and welcoming for the (slightly grubby) outdoors type.
Expected posh, but was not at all exclusive.
