We stayed at Matfen Hall for one night, from our arrival to the moment we left the whole experience was exceptional. The Hotel was still decorated for Christmas, there seemed to be a Christmas tree around every corner, it was just magical. We arrived just after 3 and were welcomed at reception by 2 wonderful staff members who took our bags and sat us in the Great Hall with a complimentary Rum Punch. A quick tour of the facilities and then escorted to our room in the eves of the 2nd floor. Room was beautiful with a massive bed and amazing bathroom. We enjoyed drinks in the Bar before heading off for our evening meal in The Keepers. Food was great and just what we needed after a busy Christmas period. A great nights sleep and a beautiful breakfast before leaving around mid day. I would highly recommend Matfen Hall to anyone looking for that special treat.
If you’re considering Matfen Hall as your wedding venue, look no further. As locals, we always knew it would be the perfect setting for our winter wedding, and after meeting Alyson, we were completely confident in our choice. From day one, Alyson was incredible. Everything was taken care of, nothing was ever too much trouble, and we knew our special day was in the safest hands.
We stayed in Suite 66 for the weekend, which is absolutely beautiful. The food and wine were outstanding, and both the pianist and DJ were fantastic, professional and a real pleasure to have. Many of our guests stayed at Matfen Hall, and every single one of them was blown away by how special the place is and by the incredible level of service. Two parties even said they’ll be swapping their annual trip to Gleneagles for Matfen Hall… praise indeed!
Thank you for everything you did to make our weekend truly perfect.
Everything was impeccable. We treated ourselves for our 10 year anniversary and our babymoon, and there was nothing that could’ve disappointed. We were greeted with welcome drinks and our bags were taken to the room, extra care was taken to chat with us about dinner plans etc. The room was serene and spotlessly clean, and staff had so kindly left the most comfy pregnancy pillow without us even asking – such a lovely touch and so appreciated at 35 weeks! Everything from dinner at the Cloisters to the treatments at the spa were just perfect. Thank you all at Matfen Hall for making our final ‘just us’ trip so memorable. We can’t wait to come back
We’ve just returned from what is probably our 7th stay at Matfen Hall and it has firmly become our go-to whenever we’re in Newcastle. It’s one of those rare places that manages to feel both luxurious and deeply cosy, and we always leave already looking forward to the next visit. We absolutely cannot wait for the new Spa to open!
Despite booking very last-minute, everything was organised perfectly for our arrival — from the bottle of champagne waiting in the room to our dog’s bed and treats already set up, which makes such a difference when travelling with pets.
A special thank you to Liam on the front desk and the girls who always makes everything seamless — from arranging dinner at Cloisters to ensuring we could enjoy breakfast with our dogs in the dog-friendly area. It’s those thoughtful touches that make Matfen feel welcoming rather than restrictive.
One of the things we love most is the decor and the atmosphere throughout the Hall — there’s a beautiful blend of heritage and comfort, and everywhere you look it feels considered and elegant. The whole setting is cosy and inviting, with fires crackling as you wander through, and the grounds are stunning for walks at any time of year.
Another highlight for us is that the staff are so happy to take our dogs out for a walk around the grounds during our stay. It’s such a lovely service and allows us to relax over dinner or explore without worrying. Nothing ever feels too much trouble — the answer is always yes.
Our room is always lovely, we always feel very spoilt, and with valet parking we quite literally pull up and everything is handled within minutes.
Thank you again for another beautiful stay — truly 5 stars every time. See you in summer for the spa opening!

Didn’t have an overnight stay but had a spa day for me and my husband. Very shabby facilities and dissapointing, the changing rooms were dated, the pool area dated, the jacuzzi not In operation, beds around pool area limited, just managed to get 2, other guests weren’t that lucky they had to stand. The water fridge in pool area regrettably full of rust. Lunch was mediocre, served in an open end balcony, with staff back and forwards, no atmosphere, tables not even dressed. Can’t fault the treatments, the robes slippers and towels very nice. In the man’s toilet excrement on the floor, no staff to report. The car park was clay, our shoes were full of it, we had to try and rub shoes on the undergrowth, before we got into car. All for the price of £340. Very dissapointing definetly not worth the money. Wish I had of taken photos. Sent email directly to Matfen Hall still no reply after 2 weeks.
