Ham radios are a great way to stay connected with other people who share your interest in radio communications.
They can also be used for emergency purposes, providing vital communication during times of crisis.
But how far can a ham radio signal travel?
The distance that a ham radio signal can travel depends on a few factors such as the frequency that you are using, the type of antenna that you are using, the power of your transmitter and the propagation conditions. It is possible to transmit around the world in some cases.
VHF and UHF ham radio range
Many newcomers to ham radio begin on VHF and UHF bands, often using low cost handheld or mobile radio units.
VHF and UHF bands are typically ‘line of sight’ meaning that the maximum range that can normally be achieved is exactly that – as far as you can see.
A good quality handheld ham radio will typically have a range around five miles, while the output of an amateur radio station located in an elevated position can be up to 50 miles.
The actual range you can get also depends on the power of the radio, and whether you have a number of obstacles in your way that could cause the signal to be reflected or absorbed.
If you position yourself in a high area, such as hilltop or on the top of a tall building, then your range will be extended.
Likewise an antenna located in a raised position will offer greater range than one lower down.
HF ham radio range
Most amateur radio operators get their first taste of HF (also known as shortwave) communication by listening to other stations on these bands.
The HF bands range between 3 and 30 MHZ and, due to their characteristics are frequently the most reliable for long distance radio communications, providing the best opportunities for ham radio operators.
The power of an HF signal reflects and refracts off part of the earth’s atmosphere known as the ionosphere and this ability to ‘bounce’ can often result in broadcast distances of thousands of miles.
The signal can bounce several times between the atmosphere and the earth’s surface which can result in ham radio signals traversing the planet resulting in truly global communications.
Different HF bands produce different results depending on the time of day and propagation can be affected by a variety of conditions.
A band that produces good results in the morning may go quiet as the day progresses and night time approaches. Likewise bands that are quiet in the early part of the day will open up towards dusk.
Distances on HF bands can easily reach 3000 miles and more
On an almost daily basis it is possible for amateur radio operators to make contact across continents and, within the northern hemisphere at least, contacts between the north American countries and Europe ( and beyond ) are common.
Going further
Reports of amateur radio operators working broadcasters in Australia and the USA at distances of 12,000 miles and more have been reported.
Such contacts depend on a combination of propagation conditions and efficient antennas.
High power also plays a role, but many amateurs work these high distances with 100 watts or less – often using simple wire antennas.
For most, though, HF ham radio is about working other stations at more modest distances and having fun.
