Stayed here for a night whilst walking the Cumbria Way. Probably the most interesting and memorable place Iâve ever stayed! Incredible place – amazing scenery and lovely volunteers – jo & Pete. Feels like a total one off. Fully recommend staying at this place, and it breaks up two quite steep climbs on the Cumbria Way.
As part of my walk along the Cumbria Way, I stayed here for a single night. Most will opt for a bed or room inside the hostel however, my preference was to camp (ÂŁ10) – either way, it is essential to book in advance as spaces may be limited.
When you discover it’s location, several miles from the nearest car park and with no public road providing access; you can begin to understand and appreciate the desire to stay here. Fantastic views overlooking the surrounding fells and valleys below.
There’s also an Honesty Shop inside, for anyone passing by in the day and looking for refreshment (most items only ÂŁ1 each). Check-in from 5pm. Facilities available on the ground floor and a great place to meet likeminded people (ie. you’re unlikely to find loud ravers, troublemakers or party-goers).
Originally constructed to serve as a hunting lodge, Skiddaw House is now England’s highest hotel and I doubt many others offer the same sense of solitude. I felt quite sad and reluctant to leave the next morning.
There are many ways to get to the house, I did the easiest way from the southeast. It was raining quite heavily that day and my shoe’s were completely soaked (not that it wouldn’t get soaked anyways since you have to walk through a waterfall) so I really do recommend a waterproof pair of shoes. Walking stick is also recommended to help you avoid puddles and climb steep steps. View was really good that day, heavy fog but still very beautiful. Once you are at the house there’s a big central areas and a lounge with fireplace to keep you warm and dry your shoes and clothes, many board games and food supplies. Water is really hot so you have to be careful while taking a shower or whatnot. Room is fitted with 3 bunk bed (6 total) not sure if all the rooms are the same.
On the way back I also saw Shepherd and dogs with many sheeps and lambs.
Great place to go and socialize (ironically at the most remote house in the UK)
A truly special place. The location is simply stunning. Skiddaw House is popular for hikers doing the Cumbrian Way, but for others it is a destination in itself – we stayed for 2 nights, and enjoyed chatting to a totally different group of people on the first and second nights. If you want to get away from cars and mobile phones, but still want to keep warm and have a hot shower, this is the place. Despite this being a youth hostel, the service isn’t basic – Sue provides a highly professional level of service, and is a friendly face who is always happy to help.
What a fantastic experience at Skiddaw House, from start to finish. I canât enthuse enough! A warm friendly welcome awaits, from Sue, the business owner, as you walk through the door. Nothing is too much trouble, you only have to ask. âThe Houseâ has log burning stoves in the kitchen and lounge, plus very hot showers, which are great after a cold wet day on the fells. The beds are very comfortable, with duvets, spare blankets and hot water bottles â Nobody should be cold. There is a small well stocked shop for ALL your meals, including alcoholic and soft drinks.
For those walking The Cumbria Way, it is a MUST to schedule a night here and go for the 6-day option. You are on holiday, why rush it, enjoy the experience and meet other like-minded folk. For those using baggage transfers, most companies will store your bag overnight, so all you need extra is a change of clothes and toiletries, as towels can be hired. Go for it: I guarantee you wonât be disappointed.
